A master cylinder is a crucial component of a forklift's braking system. It's essentially the heart of the braking system, converting the force you apply to the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure. This pressure is then transmitted through brake lines to the wheels, causing the brake pads to clamp down on the rotors and bring the forklift to a stop.

When the brake pedal is pressed, the master cylinder piston moves to the right, compressing the spring and closing the return port. This action generates pressure in the cylinder, pushing brake fluid through the lines into the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinder pistons then expand, causing the brake shoes to engage with the brake drum and create the necessary braking action.

Curious about what happens once you release the brake pedal? The piston returns to its original position thanks to the return spring. With the decrease in hydraulic pressure, the brake shoes retract, and the fluid flows back from the wheel cylinders to the master cylinder. At this point, the outlet valve closes, and the return valve opens, allowing the brake fluid to flow back into the master cylinder, releasing the brakes.

Each time you depress and quickly release the pedal, the piston in the master cylinder moves rapidly. Due to resistance from the brake lines and valves, the brake fluid doesn't immediately return to the master cylinder, creating a partial vacuum in the piston chamber. This vacuum draws additional brake fluid from the reservoir to replenish the system, ensuring consistent braking performance.
