The Function of Valve Push Rods:

Valve push rods are components within the engine's valve train that transmit the force from the camshaft, via the tappet, or lifter, to the rocker arm. They are among the most susceptible parts to bending due to their slender nature. The typical structure of a push rod includes an upper concave ball joint, a lower convex ball joint, and a hollow shaft.

 

Push rods are often made from cold-drawn seamless steel tubing to ensure they are lightweight yet rigid. Some designs may use hard aluminum for construction, always with the aim of keeping the push rod light while maintaining its stiffness. To ensure proper articulation between the tappet/lifter and the rocker arm, the upper end of the push rod is usually fitted with a steel concave ball joint that mates with the convex ball head of the rocker arm's adjusting screw. At the lower end, a ball joint is welded and fits into the concave socket of the tappet or lifter.

 

This design allows for the precise transfer of force, ensuring that the valves open and close at the correct times, which is essential for the engine's efficient operation.
